Celebrated on June full moon poya day, Poson festival is the day where Buddhism was introduced to Sri Lanka preached by the Emperor Asoka's son - Arahant Mahinda in the 3rd century B.C. On this day most of the religious rituals are taken place at the city of Anuradhapura – the ancient capital city where the conversion began initially. To celebrate this joyous occasion there are many religious activities carried out across the isle, such as; Sil Campaigns, Bodhi Poojas in temples, creation of creative pandals depicting stories from Lord Buddha’s life and Dansals – it is an activity where a group of people get together and provide food or beverages for the general public free of charge as a charitable act.
