Hikkaduwa

Blessed with pristine shores of soft sand and turquoise waters alive with marine life and perfectly curling waves, Hikkaduwa or “Hikka” as its affectionately known is one of the gems of the coast of Sri Lanka. This beach town is very popular amongst both travellers and locals alike. The restaurants dotted along hikkaduwa beach serve up some exceptionally delicious local and fusion cuisine and the funky bars are alive with music.

When it comes to watersports, surfing is the most popular with a variety of waves for surfers of all levels. Narigama Beach is said to be perfect for those catching their very first wave, North Jetty for intermediate surfers, and Main Reef for the experts.

In addition to being a hot surf spot in Sri Lanka, Hikkaduwa is also famous for turtles! You might just spot a giant turtle or two lazing about in the shallow end of the waters close to shore. The Sea Turtle Hatchery and Rescue Centre is a wonderful place to visit with displays of little hatchlings and rescued turtles receiving treatment. Visit by evening and you may even get the chance to release a baby turtle out to sea. Marine life can be experienced not just on the shores of this beach, but at some of the most wonderful dive sites in Sri Lanka as well. Explore reefs like Kiri Gala, Goda Gala, and Black Reef Point to enjoy the wonderous and colourful species of fish and coral. If you are feeling a little more adventurous, the Ship Wreck of the Earl of Shaftesbury and Conch Wreck are great spots for diving.

Head 20 minutes inland and Hikkaduwa offers a completely different experience to the Moonstone Mines, where you can learn the process of how the moonstone on the jewellery on display came to be!
