Island Weather

Sri Lanka enjoys a wonderful tropical weather all year around due to its locality being just over 600 km north of the equator.

Sri Lanka’s weather is broadly defined by two monsoons, which means that with our advice it’s really an all year round destination.

December to March has always been the best times to visit most parts of Sri Lanka, with March to September generally being the best time to visit its East Coast and the North. These coincide with the two main monsoons.

The Yala (South West monsoon) brings rains from the Indian Ocean to the south and west coasts including Colombo during the months of May and June.

The Maha (North East monsoon) brings rains from the Bay of Bengal to the east coast and northern parts of Sri Lanka during the months of December to February. Sri Lanka also experiences inter-monsoonal rains across the island, usually during the months of October & November.

The beautiful coastal areas of Sri Lanka experience a sunny climate with temperatures varying around 27°C – 31°C, whereas the temperature as you climb up into the hill country of the island usually ranges around 15°C – 24°C on average.

Rainfall in Sri Lanka is becoming increasingly unpredictable, with the rains usually being during off season, the rains generally pour down in the late evenings and nights, averaging around 2000 mm annually, but some parts of the island more than others.
