As night falls over Kandy, the streets begin to glow. The rhythmic beat of traditional drums grows louder. Dancers move with centuries of tradition as the Esala Perahera winds its way through the city.
More than a festival, it is one of the world’s oldest living cultural processions, held in honour of the Sacred Tooth Relic at the Temple of the Sacred Tooth.

The Kandy Esala Perahera is more than a festival.
For centuries, this annual celebration has brought together religion, ritual, music, dance and craftsmanship in one of Sri Lanka’s most important cultural traditions.
Held every July or August, the Perahera transforms the streets of Kandy with Kandyan dancers, traditional musicians, fire performers and ceremonies that have been passed down through generations.
What makes it remarkable is not only its history, but the fact that it remains a living tradition — practised, performed and celebrated by the people who call this city home.

Rooted in Sri Lanka’s drumming traditions that stretch back more than two millennia, the Geta Beraya remains the principal drum of the Kandyan tradition.
Carved from a single block of wood — usually jak, ehela or kohomba — the drum is shaped with a wider centre and two narrower ends. Each face produces a distinct tone: one deep and grounding, the other bright and resonant. Played together, they create the unmistakable voice of Kandyan drumming.
This is not a museum piece. It is a living craft, passed down through generations. A living sound that continues to shape Sri Lanka’s cultural identity

Kandy isn’t just Sri Lanka’s last royal capital. It’s a city of kings, sacred relics, mist-covered hills, and one of Asia’s most extraordinary cultural festivals.
Every August, the Kandy Esala Perahera transforms the city. For ten nights, the streets fill with Kandyan dancers, traditional drummers, fire dancers, whip crackers, and centuries-old rituals that have been passed down through generations.
Beyond the festival, you’ll find Kandy Lake, built in 1807 by King Sri Wickrama Rajasinghe, the Royal Botanic Gardens at Peradeniya, which served as Lord Mountbatten’s headquarters during World War II, and the iconic Bahirawakanda Buddha overlooking the city.
If you’re visiting Sri Lanka in August, this is where you need to be.
