Delft Island, Jaffna

The history of Delft Island draws back to the Chola Dynasty (an ancient tamil kingdom that invaded and temporarily ruled a part of the Northern Sri Lanka) and continued to play an important part in the political landscape during every significant era due to its placement in the middle of the Palk Strait in the north of Sri Lanka. Following the colonisation of Jaffna by the Portuguese, the island was used to rear cattle and horses, earning it the name Ilha de Vacas or the Island of Cows.

Today, the island is a mystery, situated off the beaten track; a collection of nondescript ruins of an old Dutch Fort, a colossal baobab tree said to have been planted by Arab traders who traded with the Chola kings long before colonial times and the iconic wild Delft ponies. It is also home to a small community who raise cattle, fish and run a cottage-level Palmyra industry; an unassuming and self-sufficient people.

Leave Jaffna at 6 am for the Karikkadduwan Jetty where a private boat ride will take you 10km southwest of the mainland. Soak in the sun and sea as you cruise along the turquoise waters towards the island. You will explore the island in a tiny old lorry with bench seats and make stops along the way at the fascinating sites. Drive along the rugged beach roads, appreciating the unique local houses and garden walls constructed expertly from dead corals and roofs thatched in plaited Palmyra fronds. Your journey will take you to the ruins of an old Dutch fort succumbing softly to the erosion of time and the famed baobab tree which sits at the heart of the island with branches reaching up to the clear blue skies, each with a story to tell. The Delft ponies, unique to the island, were brought over by the Dutch to be domesticated. Today, they run wild their unkempt manes rippling in the wind. Complete your day on the island with a simple yet hearty meal and head back to the Jaffna peninsula on your return ferry ride.
