Monkey Mountain

Gal Oya is a magical, off the beaten track location that is home to lush vegetation, unspoiled natural landscapes and home to the last forest-dwelling indigenous people of Sri Lanka, the Veddhas. The area is said to be home to a variety of rare herbs that have great significance in native sri lankan medicine (Ayurveda) as well as thick untouched forests that hide their secrets like they do the sunlight. There are over 32 recorded types of mammals in Gal Oya, and even more varieties of birds and reptiles. Rising from these dense jungles and beautiful water scapes is the mystical Monkey Mountain, with its breathtaking views.

After spending the night at Gal Oya Lodge, wake up at the crack of dawn, grab a quick cup of coffee or tea and your to go bottle of water and join your naturalist guide. Monkey Mountain, your destination, is located on the outskirts of the Gal Oya Lodge, roughly a 20 minute walk to the base from where it will be a challenging hike up to the peak. The journey will take you deep into an impenetrable forest, maneuvering your way through boulders and with some luck spotting wildlife on the way. The hike is tough and takes over 1.5 hours but is totally worth the effort for the spectacular views that await you at the top.
