Kudumbigala

Located approximately an hour away from Arugambay and about 20 minutes from the Kumana National Park on the east coast, the monastic complex whose ruins stand on the top of the Kudumbigala rock are said to be the first sanctuary of its kind constructed for Buddhist monks in Sri Lanka. It is said to have been built in 246 BC by King Kavantissa and is spread out around an area of 600 acres belonging to the Ruhuna Wildlife Park, featuring the only circular dagoba that has survived the test of time.

The climb to Kudumbigala is a long and winding path where with each step you are able to see the spectacular surroundings. The complex is home to over 200 caves which you can explore on your trek. The entire climb up will take you about 45 minutes and you’ll have a bird’s eye view of the entire Ruhunu plateau. This experience is best coupled with a jeep safari into the Kumana National Park.
