Highlights of Ella

For those who prefer adventures in the green hills and conquering thrilling peaks, Ella calls out to you! The train ride from Kandy to Ella is renowned worldwide for its stunning views of neat rows of tea and low-lying clouds that seem to have settled on the tops of the surrounding mountains.

The weather in Ella is at its best from December to March with pleasantly cool and sunny afternoons. This beautiful hill country location is abundant with places you can visit for absolutely mesmerisng sunrises and sunsets. Ella also has exhilarating hiking and trekking trails, exquisite cascading waterfalls, and some amazing natural pools to dip in. There are some iconic and instagramable sites to see when you explore Ella. Trek up to the Ella Gap – a gap in the mountains where you can see all the way up to the ocean on clear days. The world-famous Nine Arch Bridge, hidden amidst lush tea plantations – also knows as the “Bridge in the Sky” – was built by connecting two mountains during the construction of the Badulla – Colombo railway by the British and can be accessed by a short hike or tuk tuk ride. For adventurers, the spectacular Ella Rock is a more strenuous hike requiring at least half a day but it is so worth it. There is also Little Adam’s Peak that awaits with undisturbed views of the surrounding hills and valleys, including Ella Rock and the mythical Ravana Falls. The stunning Rawana Falls in Ella, is a sight to behold with a scenic backdrop of mountains and valleys. It is featured in the legendary Rawana epic, where Sita is said to have bathed from this waterfall whilst she was in captivity by King Rawana. The friendly locals in Ella will welcome you with a warm smile as you explore the laidback little town. The wonders of nature in this part of Sri Lanka are definitely awe-inspiring, however, exploring the local community and tea culture is just as exciting!

Difficulty & Accesibility

  • Easy – cool mornings, warm afternoons and chilly evenings make the weather pleasant for hiking. However depending on which trek you go on difficulty will vary from easy to difficult.
  • Although the hikes will not be possible for travellers with limited mobility or any ailments, the rest of the town can be viewed by vehicle and assistance can be provided for anyone who may need a wheel chair.

Things to keep in mind

  • What you are able to see and do on your tour of Ella town will depend on your itinerary, how much time you have and what you have planned with your travel consultant.
  • Wear clothing that is comfortable for hiking. Since most of the experiences require trekking, it is best to be prepared with a good pair of shoes. Since mornings and evenings are cool, carrying a warm sweater or hoodie is recommended.
