Did you know that Horton Plains National Park is the highest-altitude national park in Sri Lanka? Located over the southern plateau of the central highlands in between Nuwara Eliya and Haputale, this tranquil nature reserve is home to about 150 animals, including the elusive Sri Lankan Leopard, Sambar Deer, the endemic Bear Monkey, Toque Monkey, Fishing Cat, and Long-tailed Giant Squirrel amongst others and over 750 species of plants.
If you prefer mountain climbing, the park is also home to Kirigalpotta and Thotupala, the 2nd and 3rd highest mountains in Sri Lanka. For trekkers and explorers, the national park is a paradise; on the southern end of the plains, you will discover the stunning World’s End, a cliff with a drop of about 880 meters. If the weather is clear, you could see across the plunging valleys all the way up to spot Adam’s Peak, a sacred mountain in Sri Lanka which is around a 143 km away by car.
The long hiking trail through the national park will offer an experience like no other. Apart from the diverse flora and fauna, you can discover the extraordinary Baker’s Falls, a beautiful waterfall located about 3km from the main entrance of Horton Plains national park. As the main trek to the World’s End and Baker’s Fall is circular, adventurers do not have to be worried about getting lost!
