The open plains of Udawalawe National Park are why it stands apart from other parks as it is quite rare to be able to see the Asian elephants in wide-open spaces. The reserve covers 30,821 hectares (119.00 sq mi) of land area and is also home to a wide variety of birds, mammals and plants mostly endemic to Sri Lanka like the Sri Lankan leopard, the Golden jackal and the Ceylon spiny mouse.
As one of the most visited parks in Sri Lanka, the park is ideal for wildfire and nature enthusiasts to venture into the wilderness and explore the flora and fauna of the island nation. The large number of mammals that call Udawalawe National Park home also include the Rusty-spotted Cat, Fishing Cat, Toque Macaque, Palm Civet, Toque Macaque, and Tufted Grey Langur.
