Brief Garden designed by Bevis Bawa in the 1950s is located about 10 kilometres inland from the beautiful beaches of Bentota. It is said that this garden was what inspired his famous younger brother Geoffrey to create Lunuganga. Brief Garden was created to mirror a fairytale landscape. The gardens were the site of Bevis’s lush parties featuring the glitterati of the arts scene in the country as well as international celebrities such as Sir Laurence Olivier, Vivien Leigh, Agatha Christie and many more.
You can either explore the garden guided by a staff member of the property or by yourself, at your leisure. The staff will be able to provide you with a map if you ask and there are plenty of small, secluded corners where you can sit down and relax and take in the beautiful oasis of calm. . Over half a century later the garden still retains its unique charm displaying Bevis’s eccentricities and imagination. Once you have explored the gardens, take a tour of the main house, Bevis’s home, and admire the art and sculptures.
