Walk your way through the pages of an ancient chronicle; as you climb along the intricately chiselled stairs on a rocky peak, bask in the glorious rays of the evening sun gleaming over the monuments that have been built a millennia ago, and experience a profound sense of peace growing in your heart at an ancient site that facilitated for a great spiritual awakening – a historic site that established Buddhism in the isle of Sri Lanka!
Mihintale is a peak with an elevation of 1,019 feet (311 metres), located close to Anuradhapura which is one of the three major cities that make up the cultural triangle. The region is home to ruins which were once part of the monastery, along with re-constructed religious monuments. The highlight of the site is a rocky outcrop that stands at the heart of the hill, and it has been known by devotees as the place where Thero Mahinda who was the son of the great Indian emperor Asoka, preached the doctrines of Buddhism to King Devanampiyatissa (one of the earliest kings based in Anuradhapura from 307 BC to 267 BC) and his people. Since then, Mihintale has become one of the holiest religious sites in the country. The busiest month for pilgrims to visit would be during the month of June – which is the time of year that the epic historical event took place. Even if you are not a believer in ancient tales and chronicles, just being here, standing, and settling into the ambience brings calmness to your mind and soul.
The best times to visit Mihintale is during the early morning hours and late afternoon. The stairs to the peak have been carved equidistantly on top of each other which makes the climb an easy and seamless experience. What is astonishing here is, that the stairs have been chiselled out of the rock which the site is composed; one cannot climb the peak without admiring the craftsmanship of the sculptors.
Mihintale being a pilgrimage site can get crowded on auspicious dates such as full moon days (known locally as Poya day). Any other day the site would be unoccupied and visitors can freely explore the site in quiet contemplation.
