Take in the positive aura and rejuvenate your soul as you walk through the path of enlightenment.

Located in the historic city of Anuradhapura, Ritigala is a mountain that has been referenced in many chronicles and folktales. One such belief is that Lord Hanuman, a popular Hindu deity and a devotee of Lord Rama, accidentally dropped a chunk of Himalayas whilst carrying it to Sri Lanka to aid the wounded Prince Lakshman, Lord Rama’s brother. The region, due to its elevation, is home to unique varieties of flora which includes herbs, medicinal plants, and other endemic species. Small mammals, colourful birds and a myriad of butterfly species can also be spotted on your way to the summit. But the main highlight, however, is the monastery on the east side of the mountain located at the bottom of a trench that divides the main peak from its northern range. The trail to the ruins will take you through a scenic stone pathway that is bordered by magnificent trees and a lush and lively canopy that teems with diversity. The ruins at the site include a 366-metre-wide man-made reservoir that has been constructed during 437-367 BCE. From the reservoir, the steep steps will take you to a stone pathway that is approximately 1.5 meters wide and connects the major buildings of the monastry. The pathway has been made with interlocking slabs that are four-sided and chiselled with precision. In the ancient structures that feature double platforms is a unique feature of Ritigala as well as other forest monasteries. As you walk along the trail you would see structures that are located on raised platforms; known as Padhanagharas these will often be interconnected by stone bridges. There is evidence of the monastery having clearly divided spaces that have been designated as rooms to practice meditation, healing rituals, gatherings, teaching and other auspicious events.
