Arugam Bay

Arugam Bay is the highlight of the south-eastern coast of Sri Lanka and is known to be a little town that’s laid back and perfect for sun-seekers and surf lovers. The rugged beach boasts beige, unspoiled sands and turquoise waters with waves that curl up to form swells that offer avid surfers a pleasant thrill. Scattered with many fantastic surf point across the area Arugambay has something to offer for all skill levels. Main Point being the most advanced, whiskey point is popular for its mellow waves and easy rights, which are ideal for intermediates and beginners to try their luck at surfing and Elephant Rock for awesome empty right-hand crumblers and an easy climb to the top for mesmerising views of the beach and horizon.

The beach may be the main attraction here at Arugam Bay, but the wildlife here is no second to your surf experience. Kumana National Park, just 45.3 km away from Arugam Bay, is the eastern part of Yala National Park and is a bird sanctuary rich in water bird species such as herons, egrets, spoonbills and pelicans. If you are lucky, you’ll also get to spot the rare black-necked stork hopping across the marshy land among the mangrove trees.

A safari is not to be missed not simply because of the exotic birds to keep an eye out for, the striking wildlife including elephants, the gentle giants of the forest, and the illusive lord of the jungle, the Sri Lankan leopard.
