Spreading over an area of about 155 square kilometres, the Knuckles is home to more than 1,000 species of plants, about 128 bird species (including 17 endemic species), 31 species of mammals, and so much more. The most common animals that can be spotted in the region include sambar, barking deer, mouse deer, purple-faced leaf monkey, mongoose, porcupine, wild buffalo, wild boar, giant squirrel, the elusive slender loris, and more.
