Anuradhapura

Anuradhapura is a protected UNESCO World Heritage Site and one of the oldest continuously inhabited sites in the world, documented as the first kingdom of Sri Lanka, dating to the 4th century BC. Dotted with many historical ruins and ancient edifices Anuradhapura was an olden capital of Sri Lanka that oozes with history. Walk amidst the ruins and listen to the voices of kings, the nobleman and the commonfolk that permeate through walls of ancient monuments, uncover the memories that are engraved onto the stone pillars and take in the magnificent vistas visualising a kingdom that flourished millennia ago!

Well known amongst the attractions here are the grand stupas; Abhayagiri Vihare, Ruwanwelisaya and Sri Maha Bodhi where monthly ceremonies are held to honour a Bo tree said to have been a sapling from the original under which Buddha attained Nirvana. The city is surreal, it has a magnanimous presence and it is filled with mysteries and myths. Visit Anuradhapura and be transported back to an era that gave rise to chronicles of mythical beings and songs of powerful kings!
